Community conversation about skilled trades

How to fill in-demand skilled trades jobs is a major question for many businesses and the economy in general.

Our conversations with businesses in manufacturing, construction and other fields show that a shortage of skilled trades is one of the biggest challenges they face.

The Workforce Planning Board of Grand Erie was asked by the Government of Ontario to talk to local businesses about skilled trades shortages in Brantford, Brant, Haldimand, Norfolk, Six Nations and Mississaugas of the Credit.

We gathered information and viewpoints from Grand Erie employers through a short online survey, skilled trades appreciation events and one-on-one meetings.

The conversations centred on:

  • Identifying the trade positions that are hardest to fill and why;
  • How to increase the number of journeypersons and apprentices;
  • How to improve Ontario’s apprenticeship system.
