Celebrating Manufacturing

Our Grand Erie region has many reasons to celebrate manufacturing.

Hundreds of manufacturing companies employ some 16,500 people between them, and those employees make an amazing array of products. Some of those products are household names, while some are more obscure, for specialty markets. Some of the products are sold in North America, while others are sold around the world.

Manufacturing Month 2018 a Success

October was celebrated as Manufacturing Month in the Grand Erie region – and it was a huge success.

Some 250 high school students, teachers and guidance counsellors got a first-hand look at modern manufacturing as 17 companies opened their doors on Oct. 4, 2018, to tours.

It was an eye-opening experience for everyone, and participants learned about career opportunities in this key industry.

October concluded with a Manufacturing Appreciation Breakfast, where the Workforce Planning Board and our two local school boards thanked the firms who offered tours.

The Breakfast also featured the debut of 4 new We Make It Here videos, showcasing local manufacturers, the products they make and the people who make them.

The theme of the 2018 videos is that people who are hired in manufacturing have many opportunities to learn new skills, upgrade their training, take on new responsibilities and move up the ladder in their company. Workers may start off in an entry level position of some kind, but that is only the beginning.

Thanks to everyone who made Manufacturing Month 2018 a strong community partnership: the companies that participated, the Grand Erie District School Board, the Brant Haldimand Norfolk Catholic District School Board, and the economic development departments in the City of Brantford, County of Brant, Norfolk County and Haldimand County.

We Make It Here 2018

We Make It Here 2017

The first year for our community’s We Make It Here videos focused on skilled trades. Many manufacturers have a need for skilled trades to operate their plants, meet the demand for their products and grow their business. Companies support apprenticeships in the skilled trades and will help existing workers gain new skills, providing on-the-job training and help with additional schooling.
